Ollie Mae Ray, Ph.
D., author, dancer choreographers, and promoter of dance activities, has
presented many workshops, seminars, and in-service training programs throughout
the United States. A professor of Health, Physical Education, Recreation
and Dance since 1976, Dr. Ray’s other books include: Encyclopedia of Line
Dances: The Steps that Came and Stayed [1992]; Line Dances (Workshop Edition)
[1978]; and Biographies of Selected Leaders in Tap Dancing [1976].
Dr. Ray is now at work on Volume II of The Fun Encyclopedia of Line Dances,
a revision of the Handbook of Country and Western Dances [to be published
2002]. She has studied many forms of dance including ethnic dances,
history and costumes of of many countries. Recently she has been studying
African American and Dances from Africa.
Bob Howell
Bob Howell is the
editor of the “Easy Level” column of American Square Dance magazine.
A former teacher, principal and coach, he is now a professional recreation
consultant. He has been a caller for over 50 years, has taught caller’s
courses at several universities, and called in 50 states and several foreign
countries. He is past president of the Cleveland Area Callers Association,
on the founding committee of the Lloyd Shaw Foundation, charter member
of Callerlab and past chairman of Legacy. Bob is club caller
for three square dance clubs and a contra club, and has recorded on the
Grenn, Top and Lloyd Shaw labels. His
books include Easy Level Solo Dances: The Bob Howell Collection Volume
I and II.
Jenny Wells Vincent
Jenny Wells Vincent,
long time musician and folk music practitioner, is well known as a representative
of Northern New Mexican culture, especially the Spanish folk music
of New Mexico and the Southwest. She received her BA degree in music.
Although classically trained, her public and private school education was
rich in folk song and dance. She worked closely with the National
Folk Festival from 1952-1969. She has presented workshops for Headstart
teachers and for the Bilingual Program in the Taos Municipal schools.
Her recordings include: Spanish American Children’s Songs [1956], Spanish
Folk Songs of the Americans [1958], and Musíca Para Una Fiesta with
the Trio de Taos [1977]. Recently she coauthored Dances and Music for a
Fiesta [1995]. Jenny has numerous records and tapes and a new CD entitled
- "Spanish American Dance Times of New Mexico" W.P.A. 1936-1937 [2000].
